Module 7: Black Panther

The Disney Marvel film “Black Panther” released in 2018 is a powerful and modern example of civic imagination that is expressed through current popular media. This movie is more than just an average Marvel superhero movie, it is a cultural resource that reimagines what an alternative social and political reality could look like, one in which a group of uncolonized and technologically advanced African people lead the world in innovation and power. The fictional African nation of Wakanda reveals a vision of what the world might look like if colonialism had never taken place, disrupting African development. This reimagined future challenges both the historical conditions of racial inequality, exploitation, and culture erasure that took place as well as the current conditions of these racial inequalities that still take place today and have shaped the global power structures that we have today.

In our world, it can be seen that Africa is often displayed through the Western lens, shown as unstable, dependent on others, and generally “weak.” Many years of colonization and systematic racism have left economic and social scars that run deep, continuously affecting African nations and people of African descent across the globe. The film Black Panther rejects these narratives entirely through the world of Wakanda. This city, hidden from the world and unaffected by colonization represents a reimagined alternative to these conditions. In this society, African culture, science, and government flourishes. Additionally, this film uses traditional African culture such as art, clothing, and language alongside the advanced futuristic technology that embodies a fusion of African heritage with innovation. This creative city not only challenges the typical display of Africa but also empowers its audience to imagine new possibilities for black excellence and global inequalities.

This fictional alternative would also require systematic and technological change to exist in reality. The city of Wakanda is built on the futuristic and highly valuable resource called vibranium, which has the ability to power everything in the city, from advanced medical practices to transportation and defenses. More importantly, this resource symbolizes the potential of self determination. The world that we live in relates technological advancement as being developed within capitalist frameworks that exploit labor resources, particularly in countries such as Africa. The kind of reality that is envisioned through Black Panther would only be possible with a radical restructuring of global trade systems, government, and the sharing of knowledge. The film uses the fictional resource of vibranium to propose that technology should be used to serve and assist communities, not massive capitalist corporations. The film also establishes that cultural identity can coexist with innovation.

Some of the elements from this film and its reimagined world can be seen being reflected in current cultural and social movements. The global response to Black Panther demonstrated the power of representation as a form of civic imagination. Audiences around the world embraced the city of Wakanda as a symbol of pride, possibility, and empowerment. The fictional, superhero movie actually inspired real life conversations regarding racial equality and justice.

Still, the city of Wakanda in Black Panther remains to be a massively reimagined condition, a vision rather than a reflection of the current world systems in place today. Global inequality, technological innovation exploitation, and systematic racism still exist in powerful ways. What makes this film have such a culturally significant impact is how it transforms imagination. Black Panther enables a shared sense of possibility, through its vision of a world where cultural pride, justice, and technological advancements can coexist. This film allows viewers to see a vision what could of have been, and more importantly, what can be.
